CERTIFIED ORGANIC TEQUILA
What is Organic Tequila?
True tequila aficionados and lovers of all things tequila will tell you, the future is Organic Tequila. Tequila should not be produced at the expense of the land, the community or the people who work long twelve hour days in the fields hand-harvesting agave. Hermosa Organic Tequila is both Additive-Free and Chemical-Free.What is Certified Organic Tequila?
When people realize what chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers... are used on the agave and the agave fields they discover there are Certified Organic tequila options.Where does your favorite tequila brand get agave from?
Many tequila brands do not grow their own agave, they are not involved in the agriculture side of tequila. They purchase agave on the open market looking at the brix level (sugar content) or the maturity. They have no idea where the agave came from, they will never be asked about it as no one seems to care at this time. What is the quality of the soil where agave is grown?
What is in the soil, what was grown here before, what if any chemicals were used on this land in the past? All good questions before planting agave which will take almost decade it took to grow and feed off the soil.100% Agave is on the bottle, why don't we care where the agave came from?
Most people talk more about what happens at the distillery how they cook, crush, ferment, distill, age... the agave, not the quality of the agave they are using or where it came from. Tequila is 100% Agave (some add yeast and/or water) but agave is the main ingredient one we should focus on the agricultural side more. Why is Certified Organic the future in sustainable tequila brands?
We have all heard about harmful chemicals in the agave fields, now we are hearing more and more about chemicals like, Round Up, Tebutiuron, Bromacil, Diuron, Acetochlor, Imazapic... You don't hear a lot about them as most people who visit Mexico want to go straight to the distillery. What are additives in tequila and can you be additive-free if you use chemicals on the agricultural side?
The focus is now on additives like Glycerin that improves smoothness, Oak Extract that may add aroma and taste as if it was aged longer than it was, Caramel Coloring that darkens the spirit again to make it look like it was aged longer. The introduction of additives were to try and make tequila made with agave that was not grown organically or properly taste better. Yes, additives should not be added to tequila, but can we focus on Herbicides that have sufficient evidence of cancer in animals. Can we talk a little more about mother nature and preserving the land that grows the agave we all love so much. What is Chemical-Free and Additive Free Tequila?
Additives and Chemicals are not needed when you start with the highest quality certified organic agave! herbicides are used, both pre-emergent and post-emergentBecoming certified organic, each and every brand should do their part, tequila brands that have become organic could not be happier with the results. It might take three or more years as it takes time to transition land and move to certified organic process. If a tequila brand has their own land and makes the move to organic certification it will not only make the end consumer want the brand more, it will change the land, any creature that walks on the property, the surrounding area due to heavy rain, deep wells and aquifers... It is hypocritical to support other causes like schools, drinking water, animals... when each year you add harmful chemicals to the land.Support brands like Hermosa Organic Tequila.
